About Hyena Storm Cub
Hyena Storm Cub is an independent site that helps you choose a radio for storms, trips and power outages. We put weather alert radios, hand crank radios, walkie talkies and GMRS radios side by side and explain the differences in plain words.
You don't need to know radio terms to read it. We explain the ones that matter, like NOAA, SAME codes, FRS and GMRS, as we go.
What we cover
Our guides cover NOAA weather alert radios, hand crank and solar radios, license-free walkie talkies and GMRS handhelds and car radios. We also cover the basics behind them, like channels, frequencies, repeaters and range.
You'll find picks by use, model-versus-model matchups, single-radio reviews and short how-to guides. New pages are added over time.
How we work
For every radio we cover, we read the specs, the features and the maker's own details. We also look at what buyers often say after they've set one up.
Then we turn that into clear picks and honest trade-offs. Our How we research page explains the method.
What we are not
Hyena Storm Cub is not a store, and we don't make or sell radios. No brand pays us to rank its products.
We aren't affiliated with Midland, Motorola, Cobra, Retevis, Kaito, Sangean or any other maker. We also don't claim to have tested every radio ourselves.
A radio is a helper, not a promise. Alerts and range change with terrain, buildings and the transmitter, so keep a second way to get warnings and call for help.
GMRS radios need an FCC license (there's no exam), and we don't give legal advice. Check the FCC site for the rules before you transmit.
How we earn money
Some links on this site go to stores like Amazon. If you buy through one, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.
That never changes which radios we pick. Our affiliate disclosure has the details.
